A Twitch streamer has been kicked off the site after wearing blackface makeup as part of cosplay dress on her stream.

The Lithuanian streamer, known as Karupups (twitter @karupups) and whose real name is Karina Martsinkevich, was cosplaying the Apex Legends character ‘Lifeline’ on Saturday during the stream.

Karupups was streaming to an audience of about 200 in Twitch’s ‘just chatting’ category when she started applying dark makeup to mimic the color of Lifeline in the game.

Twitch moderators were called to attention and ended the stream while Karupups was still on the air. They handed her a 30 day ban as part of the platform’s hateful conduct and harassment policy.

Twitch states the policy is enforced on any “content or activity that promotes, encourages, or facilitates discrimination, denigration, objectification, harassment, or violence” based on race or other factors.

Karupups has since later posted a YouTube video announcing her suspension and apologising for the incident, stating that she meant no offense and admitting that she didn’t know enough about blackface.

“It was just for fun. I just wanted to change into my favorite Legend from a computer game,” she says in the video. She also labelled the incident a “very huge misunderstanding.”
